Brands of Composite/PVC Decking

January 24, 2025

Whether you’re a homeowner or contractor, understanding the different brands of composite decking is essential. Having used each brand discussed in this article, I can provide firsthand insights into their quality and performance

The brands we will cover include:

  • Trex
  • Fiberon
  • TimberTech
  • Wolf
  • Deckorators Voyage
  • Owens Corning WearDeck

Many people use “Trex” as a generic term for composite decking, much like “Kleenex” for tissues. However, there are numerous brands, each with distinct advantages and drawbacks. This article will review the most popular options available.

For full transparency, I am not sponsored by any decking brand. However, I am actively seeking sponsorship from Owens Corning, as I believe it offers the highest-quality product I have ever used. Unlike other brands, it remains cool under direct sunlight. Some brands, particularly Trex and Wolf, can become nearly unwalkable in the summer. Additionally, most composite decking brands expand and contract with temperature changes, with the exceptions of Deckorators and Owens Corning.

If you prefer a brief summary, here it is:

  • Trex: An affordable option, better than pressure-treated wood but lower in quality.
  • Fiberon: A balanced choice between cost and quality, superior to Trex.
  • TimberTech: A high-end brand offering excellent quality at a premium price.
  • Wolf: Decent quality, but often overpriced unless purchased on sale.
  • Deckorators Voyage: Expensive but highly durable and stable.
  • Owens Corning WearDeck: The best balance of price and quality, remaining cool under the sun.

Composite vs. PVC Decking

It’s important to distinguish between composite and PVC decking:

  • Composite decking is made from recycled materials, usually a mix of plastic and wood fibers. However, Deckorators and WearDeck use mineral-based and fiberglass-based composites, respectively.
  • PVC decking is 100% plastic, making it more resistant to moisture, warping, and fading. It is lighter and easier to install than composite decking.

Throughout this article, you will see pricing in lineal feet (LF) for easy comparison.

Trex

Trex is the original composite decking and remains one of the most recognized brands. It is an affordable alternative to wood but has several downsides.

Pros:

  • Budget-friendly (as low as $2/LF in some areas)
  • Strong warranty
  • Wide range of color options
  • Readily available

Cons:

  • Prone to extreme heat retention in direct sunlight
  • Lower manufacturing quality compared to competitors
  • No PVC options, only wood-fiber composites
  • Even the premium models are only PVC-capped composites

Verdict: If you are on a tight budget, Trex may be a viable choice, but Fiberon offers better quality at a comparable price.

Fiberon

Fiberon is a step up from Trex in quality, offering both composite and PVC options. It is a great mid-range decking choice.

Pros:

  • Cost-effective with good quality
  • Available in both composite and PVC
  • More stable than Trex in terms of expansion and contraction
  • Wide color selection

Cons:

  • Can still become hot in direct sunlight

Verdict: If WearDeck is unavailable or outside your budget, Fiberon is a solid alternative.

TimberTech

TimberTech is a premium brand that offers consistent quality in both composite and PVC decking.

Pros:

  • High-quality PVC and composite options
  • Wide range of colors
  • Strong warranty

Cons:

  • Expensive (ranging from $2.50/LF to $9/LF, depending on the model)
  • Retains heat in sunlight
  • Some expansion and contraction, though less than Trex and Wolf

Verdict: If you have the budget, TimberTech is a worthwhile investment.

Wolf

Wolf offers composite and PVC decking at a mid-to-high price range. Its most notable feature is its two-sided design, allowing you to flip boards if they become scratched or damaged.

Pros:

  • Two-sided boards for extended longevity
  • Good range of composite and PVC options

Cons:

  • Can become extremely hot in sunlight
  • Expensive ($3/LF to $8/LF, often overpriced)
  • Highly prone to expansion and contraction

Verdict: Wolf is a situational product—only worth considering if you find it on sale, install it in a shaded area, and do so in cooler temperatures.

Deckorators Voyage

Deckorators Voyage uses a mineral-based composite, which reduces expansion and contraction.

Pros:

  • Extremely high-quality material
  • Minimal expansion and contraction
  • Aesthetic color selection

Cons:

  • Expensive (typically $6.50/LF or more)
  • Can still get hot in the sun

Verdict: If budget isn’t a concern, Deckorators Voyage is an excellent choice.

Owens Corning WearDeck

WearDeck is made of fiberglass-based composite, offering superior stability and heat resistance.

Pros:

  • Does not retain heat in the sun
  • Mid-range price ($4.50/LF)
  • Extremely high durability
  • Minimal expansion and contraction

Cons:

  • Limited color options (mainly tans, grays, and browns)
  • Limited availability west of the Mississippi
  • Produces fiberglass dust when cut

Verdict: If available in your area, WearDeck is the best overall choice. Otherwise, consider Deckorators or Fiberon based on your budget.

Final Rankings

If budget is not an issue, the brands rank as follows:

  1. Owens Corning WearDeck
  2. Deckorators Voyage
  3. TimberTech
  4. Fiberon
  5. Wolf
  6. Trex

For those on a budget, the priority ranking is:

  1. Owens Corning WearDeck (~$4.50/LF)
  2. Fiberon (~$2.50/LF to $6.50/LF)
  3. TimberTech (~$2.50/LF to $9/LF)
  4. Deckorators Voyage (~$6.50/LF)
  5. Trex (~$2/LF to $9/LF)
  6. Wolf (~$3/LF to $8/LF; only worth it on sale)

Choosing the right decking depends on your specific needs, climate, and budget. If staying cool in the sun is a priority, WearDeck is the clear winner. If durability is key and price isn’t a concern, Deckorators Voyage is another excellent choice. For those balancing cost and quality, Fiberon provides the best compromise.

By understanding the pros and cons of each brand, you can make an informed decision and get the best value for your investment.
